6 Closing a meeting

Public Group active 4 years, 3 months ago

The sixth stage in our model for effective meetings is Closing a Meeting. Whilst first impressions are recognised as significant, it is worth remembering that last impressions can be lasting. Our discussion groups on Closing a Meeting embrace a number of topics, starting with summarising points of agreement – it is really important to ensure everyone at the meeting has a clear understanding of what has been agreed and what needs to be done next. Preparation:

What are your goals for  networking?

Often people seem to set a goal of collecting business cards, that can end up forgotten in a desk drawer. Think about what you want to end up with. If it is an important person, do some research on them if possible before the meeting. Find out about their company / department and what is important to them. If it is someone you are nervous about, this preparation will reduce anxiety

Email the people you want to network with  in advance if possible. Have a friendly and constructive tone. This will help break the ice.

    Create a timeline

If you only have 10 minutes after a meeting before you have another one, and there are several people you want to network with, a simple introduction, referencing your email and an exchange of business cards and a request for a later chat is much better than trying to bond in such a limited time.

    Pay attention to your dress

You never have a second chance to make a first impression. Freshen up before your meeting with them, so you are at your best presentation wise.
